PAST: assisted during influx of Katrina evacuees in 2005 through the Capital Area Disaster Recovery
Initiative, a Red Cross action; used VFF funds to hire a recovery committee catalyst, fall of 2005

need to organize for LTR at this time. A "virtual network" for connected disaster response was

This UW was key in developing a COAD (BRACE) in 2006 to work on community preparedness issues as well
as other phases of disaster, and continues to work in depth with BRACE to promote greater over-all
community preparedness and response-ability. UWEC staff support the BRACE Preparedness Committee and
have secured and agreement with the Council for Excellence in Government to utilize their Public
Readiness Index Survey tool for dissemination to individuals, businesses and organizations throughout

UWEC has also supported the development of an excellent "Neighborhood Preparedness Program, working in
conjunction with the CitizensCorps and BRACE.
Relief/Response
UWEC developed a complex response to both Hurricane Ivan (2004) and to the Katrina evacuees (2005),
creating financial management programs, job linking, and housing systems for these displaced people.
This UW operates both the local I&R service and the volunteer center.
Recovery
UWEC plays a key role in community recovery including involvement in the Escambia County
Long Term Recovery Committee and in the ongoing efforts relative to those activities initiated in
the disaster response phase.
Mitigation
UWEC is represented at all Local Mitigation Strategy (LMS) meetings in Escambia County and
plays an active role in the technical support group relevant to plan review. UWEC also supports
the BRACE Mitigation Committee through Citizen Corps and through the involvement of the
UWEC Director of Emergency Planning. UWEC makes presentations to community groups
regarding home mitigation and sources of funding for same.

UW 211 Lee was the call center of record for 2004 and 2005 hurricanes, assisting the EM to direct

Recovery

In Hendry, the LTRO "CREW" was exemplary in their recovery repair efforts for leveraging funds and other

UWSRC is the local leader in the recovery effort from both Hurricane Ivan (2004) and Dennis (2005),
hiring a full-time recovery administrator and case management staff, and drawing in significant
resources (money, goods, services and volunteers) for residential repair. UWSRC was one of the top
three participants in the NFL Draft Recovery program. Over 2,000 families have been assisted, over 400
homes repaired (as of 8-7-07) and over 380 families were assisted in finding permanent housing solutions.
UWSRC acted as the turnover agent for FEMA trailers to families in Santa Rosa County.

UWVF offers various disaster training workshops throughout the year to the community
(i.e. business continuity and volunteer training.) In partnership with Volusia County
Emergency Management, the Volusia County Citizen Corps Coordinator operates out of
the UWVF offices and is an integral part of UWVF's Disaster Initiatives & Preparedness
activities. In 2007, through Volunteer Florida, UWVF was awarded an AmeriCorps
VISTA volunteer to focus on the development of a Disaster Volunteer Initiatives program
for preparedness and volunteer affiliation in advance of a disaster event.
Relief/Response
UWVF serves as the ESF15 coordinator for volunteers, as well as the 211 service, which
routes disaster calls to appropriate resources. UWVF's responsibilities include but are not
limited to volunteer recruitment, deployment and management (both physical and virtual
VRCs); agency coordination and support; media coordination; convener and
communications link between community needs and state/ national command centers;
and collecting/ allocating disaster relief funds.
Recovery
UWVF remains involved with recovery efforts after the 2007 tornadoes, offering
administrative, accounting and volunteer support to VIND.
Mitigation
UWVF serves as the fiscal agent and provides administrative support to VIND for the
Volunteer Florida Foundation's "My Safe Florida Homes" mitigation program.
